How to Promote CompFAQs

Final questions for the group: How promote CompFAQs?

  • In the half year that the site has been operational, it has seen little unprompted contributions. The two exceptions maybe are Christiane Donohue’s international composition studies site, and Margaret Marshall and Deborah Minter’s archives of writing program documents. The large bulk of the material has been the work of single people who have been solicited by Glenn or Rich, or assigned the work by a teacher.
  • Motivations to contribute to scholarly Wiki sites
    • to get information online and public
    • to get information right
    • to promote a perspective
    • to join the fray, to participate in a controversy
    • to boost ego, for personal satisfaction
    • to advance the knowledge and lore of the profession
    • to assist colleagues, known and unknown
  • Motivations not to contribute
    • not enough time
    • doesn’t count in the promotion and tenure process
    • it’s the kind of basic knowledge or bibliographic work appropriate for students, not full-fledged scholars
  • How can we promote and support participation?
    • the profession as a whole
    • Glenn and Rich
