Beginning with the Fall 1998 semester, Purdue’s English Department has offered a Ph.D. second field in Writing Program Administration.

Requirements:

Ph.D. students in the English Department at Purdue “must demonstrate proficiency in a secondary area by either course work or a second written preliminary examination” (from the Department of English Manual for Graduate Study). Proficiency in the secondary area in Writing Program Administration may be demonstrated by taking four courses, as outlined below.

Required Course:

  • English 680WPA Seminar in Writing Program Administration

At least one of the following:

  • English 680WAC Seminar in Writing Across the Curriculum
  • English 680A Seminar in Writing Assessment and Evaluation

At least one of the following:

  • English 518 Teaching English as a Second Language: Principles and Practices
  • English 605 Rhetoric and Computing
  • English 630 Issues in ESL Writing
  • English 680T Professional Writing Theory
  • English 680D Distance Education/On-line Learning
  • English 680W Writing Center Administration
  • English 680R Rhetoric and Instituional Discourses
