(1) Surveying 800 students on their experiences writing at Yale. The survey has 21 questions, 18 of them multiple choice, about courses, tutoring, expectations for writing, etc. We’re hoping to find patterns of satisfaction/dissatisfaction that can help us improve our resources. We’re especially keen to see if seniors answer differently, since they were not subject to the new writing requirement. (2) Studying the portfolios of 60 juniors. These portfolios contain all the writing required of these students over their first three years in college. Here, we hope to correlate our sense of progress, strengths, etc. against what might be called “demographic” information: incoming test scores, major, courses taken (and in what order), etc. Our hope is to find whether some patterns of fulfilling the requirement are more effective, at least for students in certain score and discipline groups.
