Joan Mullin-Content is Writing

Content-based courses are not effective | ContentofComposition.HomePage | Debra Dew-Content is rhetoric and composition

From: Joan Mullin

Years ago Joe Harris (see his textbook) and, earlier, Patty Harkin (one of her talks) suggested that the content of writing should be writing. It took a while for me to believe it. However, my current lower division undergraduates learning to be writing tutors are reading select theories of writing—something I’ve done before in comp and other classes—and I’m impressed with how they relate it to their own writing, how it shows in their own texts and how they challenge the theories—and make me re/articulate my own theories.

I think the success of writing about writing perhaps depends on what students read—it’s not always successful— and what else they do in class—which could mean adding other readings besides those about writing. It’s worth trying.
