Interview

McDonald, Robert L. “Interview with Gary Tate.” Composition Studies/Freshman English News 20.2 (1992): 36–50.

As the founder of the Freshman English News (Composition Studies) and pioneering advocate for scholarly organization of composition, this “conversation” focuses on Tate’s legacy as one of the founders, teachers, administrators, and scholars in the field. Tate response to inquiries concerning pedagogy, the state of contemporary composition research, composition publishing, the transformation of the teaching of writing, and the importance of realigning literature to writing in English studies. Tate asserts that the activity of writing in the classroom is the most important thing that we can examine, analyze, and learn from currently. He insists that regular classroom teachers need more genres of academic writing and research on composition studies need to continue. Tate argues that some pedagogies should be taught as interrelated, i.e. critical pedagogy and teaching writing as a craft or writing across the curriculum. He posits that writing and literature belong in the same classroom together and that advance writing courses are disappearing or non-existent.
