Name: Daniel Keller
Institution: College of San Mateo
Comments: This is a good example of how instructors can create service-learning projects on a small scale, without a lot of institutional support (such as credit hours given for service, or partnerships between a college and service agencies). For this project, students participate in a one-day off-campus activity on a Saturday. I make all of the arrangements myself, but, fortunately, local community organizations like Samaritan House are easy to work with and can accommodate large groups of volunteers. As small as it is, this project helps students see that the issue they have been reading about is real—and students in the past have rated this experience as their favorite part of the class. Normally the volunteering takes place shortly after the middle of the term, and it is a great way for students to get to know each other better outside of class. It brings class discussions and debates to life better than any other project I do during the semester.
