Designing Courses

by Elizabeth Moody

The following is a selected sample of useful external resources for those teaching or overseeing basic writing courses.

Journals and Online Resources

The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing and The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Writing, both of which are available online and in print and provide concise annotations of each of hundreds of key articles and books on the subject of composition, are an excellent starting point for those interested in the shape of research in the field of composition or in finding theoretical or practical models for composition courses and programs. BBTW also provides a list of useful periodicals.

The National Council of Teachers of English publishes a number of periodicals, including Teaching English in the Two-Year College and College Composition and Communication, which feature articles and other resources of interest to teachers and administrators working with basic writers. Abstracts are available online, and subscribers may access current and archived full-text issues on the web.

Abstracts of past issues of The Journal of Basic Writing are available online. JBW’s publisher, the Conference on Basic Writing, also provides the free online resource Basic Writing e-Journal and links to selected online resources and the websites of some basic writing programs and courses.

CompPile provides a free, online searchable inventory of academic work in composition and rhetoric from 1939 to 1999 and offers a small selection of full-text materials.

The Council of Writing Program Administrators is in the process of making back issues of its journal, WPA, available to the public in digital format.

Publishers of Professional and Classroom Resources

Bedford/St. Martin’s publishes many books geared to students and teachers of composition.

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) publishes many books on topics related to teaching composition both at two-year and four-year colleges.
